 Topic: “Global Humanitarian Project Management”

The presentation draws on an example of how one of the largest humanitarian agencies, the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, using project management tools adapted to the specific crises meets its obligations to beneficiaries. The working environment is rife with contradictions, ambiguities and uncertainties, requiring leadership and management practices that are nimble and responsive to an evolving crisis, to effectively deliver assistance and concurrently manage risks. Adaptation to the cultural environment, history and being cognizant of political undercurrents are also fraught with risks.

Measures of effectiveness and return on investment can be especially vexing and local ownership is a key ingredient in any plan of action. Challenges such as civil-military relations, collaboration with fragile states that are at the top of the list of Transparency International’s perception of corruption, wavering political will, harnessing some of the emerging technology to obtain a successful outcome are some of the issues that will be addressed during the presentation and subsequent discussion.

The speaker, Tetsuo Theodore (Ted) Itani, has an extensive background with the Canadian Army, the United Nations and numerous humanitarian relief missions.  Ted has been an external member of the faculty of the Pearson Centre since 1996, and currently works part-time as a Humanitarian Advisor.
